Groceries
Suisan Fish Market
Near the Hilo Harbor; our favorite store on island for fresh fish. Wide selection of poke for lunch. Get a poke bowl here and eat it under the Banyan trees across the street at the Liliuokalani Garden Park.
Safeway
Located in the industrial side of Hilo. Also has a good fresh fish and poke selection with at least one local/fresh option daily. We prefer shopping here, but other options are KTA and Foodland.
Waimea Butcher Shop
Local and premium meats; worth the trip for the local beef. Highly recommend the flatiron or bavette when available. Also now serving an excellent lunch menu.
Kilauea Market
in Hilo. Asian grocery store for all your specialty curry ingredients: kaffir lime leaves, galangal, curry pastes, variety of fish and soy sauces.
Rebecca’s Produce
Hole in the wall shop in Honokaa with excellent local fresh produce.
Farmer’s Markets
Hilo Farmer’s Market
Big Market days on Wednesday and Saturday. Better produce than the grocery store, but not farm to table. A lot of produce seems to be flown in from other Hawaiian islands.
Kamuela Market
Saturdays until 12-1pm in Waimea. More of a locals market while the Waimea Town Market feels a bit more touristy.
Waimea Town Market
Saturdays until noon. Very popular fresh-baked bread, local farm produce and numerous artists. Lots of vendors selling lunch.
Hakalau Mid-week Market
5-10 minute drive from home; open 3-5pm on Tuesday afternoon. Mostly local Hamakua produce and some baked goods. Nothing imported here, so it’s limited to whatever is in season.
