Full Day Activity. Parking can be difficult. Start early and hike the 4 mile Kilauea Aka Trail, walk down to the Thurston Lava Tube. Make a quick stop at the steam vents, then have lunch at Volcano House where there is a great view of the Kilauea Caldera, then head down Chain of Craters road to the Pu’uloa petroglyphs and down to the coastline.

Mauna Kea Visitor Center
Bring your coat and hike the Sunset Hill Trail from the visitor center to watch the sun dip beneath the clouds. Then check out the astronomy exhibits at the visitor center. Look on the website for their stargazing events.
